The return of Formula 1
Finally! The moment I’ve been waiting months for. Formula 1 is finally returning in 2020.
After a long lock down period teams are now back at work in the factories getting their cars ready for the shortened 2020 season. Some teams have taken their cars out for shakedown runs to get the rust off from such a long break for the teams, like Mercedes did at Silverstone on June 10. The drivers are starting to come back as well.
The season will kick off again with a double header at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, followed by Hungary and then another double header, but this time at Silverstone in the U.K. Azerbaijan, Japan and Singapore’s races have all been officially cancelled for the year and Formula 1 is looking to find alternative venues to host races to get as close to a full season as possible.
To say I’m excited is an understatement. I’ve been going through massive F1 withdrawal for the past 6 months waiting for the day that it returned. There is even talk of hosting some races at tracks like Mugello, Imola or even Jerez, according to F1 Director of Motorsport Ross Brawn. The Moto GP race at Mugello has been cancelled, leading more speculation that there will be an F1 race there following the race at Monza in Italy. To have races come back to tracks like Mugello is hugely exciting because F1 hasn’t raced there for many years.
The season is likely to end with multiple races in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi (like usual). Bahrain has multiple track configurations that can be used, so there is the possibility for one race to be held using the typical F1 layout and one race using the endurance race layout or even the alternative “outer oval” track. Not only is this great for racing but will likely mix things up because it’ll be a track that most drivers have never raced on before.
It’s only 2 more weeks until the season gets started and you can bet that I’ll be watching qualifying and the race.
It can’t come soon enough.
