Has Alonso set his sights on the wrong Triple Crown?

When Fernando Alonso announced his intention to go after winning the Racing Triple Crown, he raised a few eyebrows. Will he be able to win the Racing Triple Crown before his time is up? Or has Alonso set his sights on the wrong Triple Crown? The Racing Triple Crown is known as, almost, the holy grail of motor racing. The combination of the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and Le Mans wins has only been achieved once before, by racing legend Graham Hill. Alonso has won at Monaco twice, in 2006 (Renault) and 2007 (McLaren) and won at Le Mans in 2018 with Toyota. He also attempted the Indy 500…

Is Kimi’s return to Sauber good for F1?

After 18 years Kimi Raikonnen will be driving for Sauber again next year. Is this a good thing for Sauber and F1 or is Kimi just trying to hang on a bit longer with whoever would sign him? When Kimi lost his drive at Ferrari in 2018 to newcomer Charles Leclerc many thought that Kimi would retire. Nobody would blame him since he’s had a very successful career in F1. Kimi won the Driver’s Championship in 2007 during his first stint at Ferrari and has spent time at Sauber, McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus and Renault. Kimi has been a staple figure in F1 for as long as many fans can remember,…

The best from the Detroit auto show

The 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) or, more commonly known as, the Detroit Auto Show is being held from January 14-27, although the main event was from Jan 14-17. Like any auto show there was some hits and some misses, but one thing can be said with absolute certainty; the new Toyota Supra stole the show. However, the new A90 Supra wasn’t the only noteworthy announcement made last week. Below are my top new or refreshed vehicles from the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. 2020 Shelby GT500 The all new Shelby GT500 is Ford’s answer to the Dodge Hellcat and the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The new GT500 is swinging…

    The 600LT loses its roof

The brand new McLaren 600LT Spider was revealed today. This is part of McLaren’s plan to release 15 new models by 2022. While it is not a totally new model it is new … and exciting. This is the 5th vehicle to wear the LT badge, one that was introduced on the F1 GTR Longtail (LT) racecar in 1997. The LT moniker was reintroduced on the 675LT Coupé in 2015. The 600LT was already faster and more agile than the previous benchmark of the 675LT. The signature top mounted exhausts are already known for spitting flames and having the top down will only add to the excitement and being able…

What the heck are Vortex Generators?

Like I mentioned in my post about Why supercars matter to me I am very interested in the aerodynamics of racing and the technology behind the cars. One thing that has always interested me is the way that aerodynamicists can manipulate the airflow around the vehicle to improve the way the vehicle moves through the air. Aerodynamicists can accomplish this manipulation of the airflow through various different solutions including the use of wings, spoilers, changing the shape of the vehicle, etc. One method I want to focus on today is the through the use of vortex generators. Vortex generators are small appendages in various locations around a vehicle which create…

Behold the new 2020 Toyota Supra

While the new Supra was expected to be revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in a few days, thanks to Toyota Mexico the official, un-camouflaged images have been released. Toyota’s Mexican arm accidentally sent out a tweet with the images this morning. While the tweet has since been removed Jalopnik was speedy enough to capture both the tweet and the images. Translated to English, the tweet read “Our new #Supra arrived in Japan!, and this is the story that #AkioToyoda tells us about its return.” Below you can find the glorious images taken from the video that was posted: I think the car looks really good and will likely please…

What is the best family vehicle?

What is the best family vehicle? This has been a debate for going on for many years and will continue to be debated in the future.  And the answer isn’t very straight forward since it largely depends on the choices available to you, budget and where you’re located in the world. Since I have young children this topic is near and dear to my heart as it directly impacts me.  However, as a car enthusiast I don’t want to have any old family hauler to get us from A to B, but rather a family hauler which ignites a fire within me every time I drive the kids to soccer.…

The new Lamborghini Huracán EVO brings more power

The brand new Lamborghini Huracán EVO steps up the game of the baby Lamborghini with more power, revised aero and an updated interior. The updates bring the power of the Performante along with the latest in handling and driving dynamics. One of the main upgrades done to the Huracán EVO over the standard Huracán is the increase in power to 640 hp (470 KW) and 600 Nm of torque from the V10 at 6500 RPM. The result of this power increase is that the Huracán EVO will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and from 0-200 km/h in, an even more impressive, 9.0 seconds. Another key improvement is the…

    Why supercars matter…. to me

Many people have talked a lot about the trickle down of technology from racing to supercars to everyday cars.  While that does happen (hybrid, electric motors, carbon fiber), and is extremely important,  I have a different opinion on why supercars matter, or at least why they matter to me. I never grew up having posters of supercars on my bedroom walls.  It wasn’t until I was in my late teens when I discovered my love for everything cars.  I was 19 and all of a sudden I discovered Formula 1 – I was hooked.  Now, this was in the middle of the Schumacher and Alonso duel in the early 2000s,…
